Shaver Lake

Sometimes I make out when mommy’s plans fall through!  She was supposed to go visit my Aunt Lynn & cousin Andrew in Colorado & go white water rafting (without me!) and something came up and they couldn’t go.  She was sad not to get to see her family and she had a conference that she probably should have went to but decided to take me camping instead!

Since it was only a week before we were going to go and it was June and very hot we were limited as to where would be a fun place to hang out for a few days.  In mommy’s scientific way, she looked for green and water on the map that was about a 6 hour drive.   She likes to try new places, so off to Shaver Lake we went! I love road trips! Let’s go!

Shaver lake is in the Western Sierras, on the way to Yosemite National Park.  It was approximately 380 miles from San Diego.  It is a very small town north of Fresno.  There were a few campgrounds to pick from but we camped at Camp Edison because we were not sure if it was going to be hot and we may need our AC. We are spoiled!

It wasn’t our usual camping experience.  Camp Edison is a very large campground and much more expensive than we are used to.  It was $42. A night with electric and $6. A night for dogs!  They should have at least given me some treats for that price!  But it was very nice, lots of trees and even though the campsites were next to each other, it was ok.  We had very nice and respectful neighbors!

We spent the entire first day SUPing to remote beaches so I could play with my Wubba and swim.  It was a Wednesday but there sure were a lot of people out and about! We were the only SUPers though!

We even paddled to a little island! It was really cool.

The water was cold but I was so excited that I didn’t even care!  I just swam and swam and swam!  Watch this video of how I drive mommy crazy!

After we were done SUPing, mommy had lunch in the RV & then attempted to sit on the lakeshore and read but I don’t make that easy.  I just want her to play with me!  So she finally said we had to go find our campsite and get set up.

Man! We were both so tired after that first day that I didn’t even let mommy make the bed before I went to sleep.  We slept at a truck stop north of LA the night before and didn’t get much sleep because those trucks are noisy!  Plus, we were non-stop since 4: 30 a.m. We don’t waste any time when we arrive at camp!

The next day, we went hiking.  We  logged over 11 miles on the nature trails around camp.  It was perfect because it was shaded and mostly around water so I got to go swimming again!  There were trails everywhere so we kept getting off course but that was ok because they were perfect trails for me and my sore paw, they were actually kind of soft!  We went and checked out Dorabelle campground next to ours.  It was small & very nice. No hookups though.  We took a lot of breaks and even went back to camp mid day so mommy could read and have lunch and I could watch for squirrels.

After lunch we hiked the rest of the nature trail.  We even saw a horse camp with beautiful horses that you could rent to ride the trails.  The trails were everywhere, it was so perfect that we could just hike right from camp.  I even found a house so that mommy and I can move here!

Another busy day, I slept great even though it got a little cold in the middle of the night.  Did I mention that we are spoiled?

The next day, we spent the entire day on the lake.  Mommy SUPed over 6 miles.  She went the whole way to the dam so she officially paddled the entire west side of the lake.  Mommy took our lunch and her book so we stopped a lot so I could swim and just hang out on the beaches.   I even got to do a little Rock Diving!

It had been such a busy 3 days that I had to take a little camp nap while mommy was reading her book.

It gave me the energy that I needed to be on the lookout while mommy was paddling.  We had another fun day!  I love swimming and being on the water, especially when it doesn’t taste like salt!

The next day was Saturday and we had to leave the campground.  It worked out great because our friend, Debbie and her pups Bandit and Bootsie live nearby so they came up and spent the day with us.  We took a little hike to Rancheria Waterfall.  I was bummed because the water was so fast that I couldn’t swim!  But mommy loves waterfalls so I was happy to go with her.

She knew that I was disappointed so they took us to Huntington Lake so Bootsie and I could swim. Wouldn’t you know that she wanted the same stick that I was playing with but we figured it out and had a great time swimming together.   The water was much colder at this lake and it was much windier.  It was so windy that there was even a sailboat regatta going on! It was probably better that we camped at Shaver Lake!

Mommy couldn’t believe how dirty and wet I was the entire week!  Just shows how much fun that I had!

It was a beautiful week and we feel so grateful to be able to take off and get a way and enjoy life.  Time goes so fast that mommy does not want to waste a minute with me.
