No Excuses not to exercise in Extreme Weather

coldNo Excuses not to exercise  in Extreme Weather!

While this is not a topic that is usually even thought of in San Diego, it does happen as we have recently witnessed!  Rain and hot days are not too common in the perfect San Diego climate but when they happen, do you still workout?

What if Leash Your Fitness class is cancelled? How about other areas of the country?

When there are snowstorms or temperatures that force you to stay indoors, how do you make sure you are still getting your workout in? Lately  on the East coast, we have been hit with several snow storms and temperatures so cold, you wouldn’t even THINK of working out outside.

Here are some tips for when you just want to not work out and give the excuse, it’s too cold…or hot….or rainy…..or whatever the excuse of the day may be!

  • Try a free online workout video! Leash Your Fitness has a new workout every Monday you can check out, its called Move It Monday! You can also just google free workout video and a ton will pop up!
  • Find an indoor track and get your run on! Not a runner? Use the track to walk or do some speed work. Switch it up and add in some high knees and butt kicks. Some people even go to the malls and get their walk in.  You can take advantage of the stairs as well!
  • Try a fun treadmill workout! I personally hate treadmills but do not mind them if I’m doing something that is structred to mix it up.  HERE is one you can try! It really makes the time go by much faster. There are also a ton online. Just google treadmill workouts in Google images and they will pop up!
  • Clean the house! Like REALLY clean it. Nothing burns calories more than a deep cleaning session. Throw some music on and think of vacuuming, scrubbing and dusting as exercise instead of a chore!
  • Try a new indoor workout class! Usually there are discounts for the first class so when the weather is crappy, this is a perfect time to do it! You may even find a new workout you love.
  • Use a fitbit or phone app to count your steps & keep track of your movement. Make sure you are getting those 10,000 steps in even if it is walking around your house.

And remember, even when the weather is bad, Fido still has to go for a walk! Make sure you both are dressed for the weather and who knows, once you are out there you may just walk or run longer than you thought you would!

Thanks to Kelly Darrel for her input on this post. Her and Scooter moved from sunny San Diego to freezing Annapolis, MD last year.  She is not liking the cold weather but is making the most of it and staying fit!
