Volcan Mountain was a great location to move our Leash Your Fitness March hike to when we had an unseasonably warm March Saturday! It was a BEAUTIFUL day in Julian!
We got an early start and our runners and hikers set off together up the mountain at 8:30 a.m. Remember when hiking with dogs, you have to beat the heat!

We headed up the mountain from the beautiful starting gate on the fire road. Approximately 1/2 of a mile into the hike we turned right on to the 5 oaks single track trail. This trail is a bit more of a scenic trail with lots of twists and turns to make the uphill climb more tolerable. The 5 oaks trail meets up with the fire road and the fire road is a steady climb to the top! The views are worth it! On a clear day you can see the mountains, beach and desert from the top! There is a memorial bench that you can rest and enjoy the view from or you can lay on the ground with your pup like Tracy did!

There is a lot of history on Volcan Mountain. You can stop and see the remnants of the old house, a beacon light and a beautiful memorial bench! Take your time at the top, you just climbed from 4100′ – 5353′ so enjoy the view!
On the return trip, you can make a different route by returning on the fire road or take the 5 oaks trail back down. In March the flowers were beginning to blossom and the grass was green from the winter rain!

After returning to the start, you can drive to Wynola and enjoy a dog friendly lunch on the patio at Wynola Pizza and get their World Famous Pizza Salad but you may want to share it with your friends! Enjoy!

We hope to see you on our next hike, we are doing a sunrise / full moon hike up Mt Woodson! You can sign up HERE, this will be our last hike of the season as it is getting too hot to be on the trails with the dogs!
Enjoy the photos……
