Dog Training Tip: Signs of Stress

Here at Leash Your Fitness we want to be sure our doggies are the best behaved dogs around!  Recently, we took an Advanced Obedience class through the amazing trainers at Pawtopia. Here we share training tips that will help while working out with your pup!

Today’s Tip: Identifying signs of stress or anxiety.

We take our dogs into lots of fun and exciting situations!  They love to be with us, but sometimes our pups are just too overwhelmed.  Noticing signs of stress or anxiety in your dog OR another person’s dog can be incredibly important for preventing a situation from escalating too far.

-Yawning, unless they really did just wake up

-Panting, unless they are clearly cooling off

-Or suddenly NOT panting when they were just cooling off a moment ago

-Licking nose, unless they just had a treat

Our doggies will show us these signs before the more obvious signs of fixating or back hairs standing up.  If your dog or someone else’s is showing any of these early signs of discomfort, walk your pup away from the situation and give them some space for a few moments.  It’s important that your dog trusts that you are protecting them!

Stay safe!
