What a bummer to have to leave Kachess Lake. The smoke was so bad that it was giving mommy a headache. So we headed back to the 90 and stopped at a little coffee shop in Snoqualmie to figure things out. We decided to just start heading north and see what happens.
We headed up to the 203 and landed in Monroe, WA. Home of this cool bridge and swim spot that had our name written all over it. Mommy and I swam upstream against the current for a good workout. We met some cool people there too!
We stayed in the Walmart parking lot that night for a very unrestful nights sleep. It was very bright but hey, it was FREE so we weren’t complaining. As much as we wanted to go East and see our friend Jennifer again at her family cabin near Leavenwerth, we decided not to chance the smokey weather and decided to head north toward Canada.
We found a cool lake there on the edge of Mt Baker aptly called Baker Lake. We headed to Horseshoe Cove campground because there were walk in sites on the lake. THIS is where the adventure began! We found a site but it was literally in a parking lot with a trail up to the campsite. We took it and inflated our SUP. We walked up to pay the camp host but she was not there so mommy left a note on the RV window that we would pay when we returned. We took off and THIS is what was around the corner!
Wow! We were so happy! We kept paddling down the lake and we were just about ready to turn around because the wind was picking up but mommy saw a car and a man standing on the side of the lake. She wondered if that was the forest road that she saw on the map so she paddled over to him.
It turned out that it was a dispersed camping area unlike any that we had ever seen! It had a bathroom, designated sites, fire pits AND a picnic table! OMG!! It was PERFECT! It was called Sandy Creek.
Mommy was talking to the man, Jordan, who was going to save some sites for his group. While they were talking, two other men pulled up, Jose and Logan. They were regulars to the area and Jose was saying that this area will fill up so if we wanted the sweet spot on the water, we better grab it. Mommy REALLY wanted this spot! She told Jose that she would paddle the 3 miles back (against the wind), get Spirit and come back. He was worried that somebody would take it so…..he put the SUP in the back of his truck and drove us back to the camp! Can you believe that? It was so nice of him! He even made Logan walk back to camp with their little Cujo Chihuahua! haha
Mommy got the RV and good thing cause somebody took our spot while we were gone! It worked out, we drove back and got this KILLER SITE on the water for FREE! It was much better than the parking lot site and we saved $54. for 3 days of camping!
Jose was our angel. We told him that angels come in all shapes and sizes. We gave him a BIG bag of KIND snack bars and our Jack’s Journey USA book! He was so excited!
We met a lot of cool people at the campground. Jordan left but he came back with his friends named Crystal Rainbow, Happy and Forrest. The other couple was Sequoia and Cedar. Mariliee was there with her two dogs, Nahla and Louie. They were the resident hikers and told us about some cool hikes.
Because we had such a cool spot, we didn’t want to move Spirit so we hung out at camp all day. We went for a paddle so mommy could wash her hair. Her and I swam and swam and swam in a great little cove where we escaped from the wind.
Then we went on a hike near camp. It wasn’t very long but it had really cool trees….
Mommy even got a little workout in with her TRX….
We ended the day with a beautiful sunset paddle….
It was a really cool and relaxing day which was a good thing because the next day was off the charts!
We woke up and it was super clear. Out on the SUP we went for a morning paddle.
Mommy was so happy and so was I. We had some bumpy rides the last 2 days because of the wind. We paddled down to a little stream and we went swimming and we stopped a few times on the way back for a few dips. It was such a perfect morning!
We got back to camp and our friends Ashley and Emma were waiting for us to go on a hike. We were totally surprised when we found out Ashley lived 20 minutes from where we were staying! It was so cool!
We got ready and off we went to the Scott Paul Trail. Marilee told us about it and Ashley had never been so it was perfect. We thought is was only 6 miles but it ended up being closer to 9! It was so perfect! The trails were really nice through the trees. Which was good since it was warm and we got a late start.
We ascended a hill and came out to a beautiful meadow with tons of wild flowers and beautiful views…
The trail traversed a beautiful area with great views…
We found some water to cool off and rock climb!!
The trail went up, down and all around. We even got to go over a suspension bridge! How cool is that?
We were so happy that Ashley and Emma took us to this awesome hike. Plus, it was so fun to see them. We hadn’t seen them in over 6 years since they moved to Washington from San Diego. Mommy and Ashley talked non stop for the entire 5 hours hike!
And I liked hanging out with Emma. She is my type of dog. Scruffy, not afraid to get dirty and not a real “talker”. She is just content to hang out.
Toward the end of the hike, we got to go over another bridge. This one was much easier….
….and it ended with a really easy and pretty trail. Which was good cause I was over the booties and I was happy to not have to walk on rocks….
What an EPIC day!! We went back to camp very happy campers! Plus, our camp was not a bad place to hang out for the night with all of our new friends.
The next day, mommy realized that the house battery was going dead. We had been sitting here for 3 days so it was time to move on. We were REALLY bummed as we wanted to do one more paddle since it was a beautiful day but everything happens for a reason.
We went into the nearest town and got everything checked, loaded up for our journey across the border to Canada!! Mommy is a little nervous but we know our travel spirits will be with us!
