Most people do everything in a forward motion. You walk, run and do all of your exercises going forward. Although this is great, you must move in different planes to make sure ALL of your muscles are getting a fair share of the workout and so that you don’t create muscle imbalances.
Another thing that most people forget about is balance. We lose our sense of balance as we get older so it is important to work on it on a daily basis.
We work on both of these things in every Leash Your Fitness class and we want YOU to work on them too!
Today we are going to show you how you can add some sideways motions into you and your dogs daily dog walk. You can do this little drill anywhere. We happen to be on a basketball court but feel free to do it on your walk through the park or shuffle across the grass! Remember that this is a great time to work on your dog’s obedience during the drill. Remember to tell him/ her that she is doing a great job!
You can watch our demonstration video HERE!
1/ Pick a landmark and shuffle sideways to the landmark.
2/ Once you get there, put your dog in a sit or down. Work on your balance by balancing on your left leg and raising your right leg up to the side. Focus on your hips. The secret is to keep your core tight, that will help with your balance. Do 10 – 20 on this side.

3/ Shuffle back to where you started and then do the other side. If you don’t know what I mean, watch how Adele and Rosie do it HERE!
**To put a new spin on this exercise you can even try to close your eyes while you do the side raises.
Have fun and don’t forget to give your dog a big hug after his/ her workout!
He/ She loves to workout and be with you.
