When you think of a personal trainer do you conjure up images of green juice, muscle shirts and workout videos? Do you think that they never eat anything bad, dream of working out and have the will power of a Saint?
Maybe instead you should be thinking of why they got into the profession in the first place and how they struggle just like YOU.
For me personally, I have secretly struggled with depression ever since cutting out alcohol 15 years ago. I guess burying my feelings with alcohol was working for me! Working out makes me feel good & helps tremendously. Getting my heart rate elevated and moving my body makes me feel much better than anti-depressants ever did!

I also suffer from an auto-immune thyroid condition called Hashimoto’s. My mother had another auto -immune condition called Rheumatoid Arthritis, which I obviously don’t want to get. Once you have one auto-immune condition, you are likely to get another so I educate myself constantly on how diet can decrease my chances of getting this. So far, it is working and my thyroid numbers have improved dramatically without any help from my doctor who had no idea what to do except put me on medications when my thyroid ceased to function. (which hasn’t happened)
Many trainers get in the business because they found a way to help themselves and now they want to help others….
- My friend, Alicia from Stress Monkee now studies stress management and schools her clients on proper nutrition because she got Type 1 Diabetes in her 40’s because of stress. She is blowing her doctor’s mind because she is on the lowest amount of insulin possible because of how she controls her diet. She is now gluten free, managing her stress, and getting enough sleep.
- My friend, Beverly from B-Fit had a ton of stomach & thyroid issues. No “doctor” could figure it out. She went off gluten and dairy and a few other things and now is doing much better. She opened a gym and is helping a ton of people feel better through diet and exercise.
- My friend, Doug wrote a book called “From Felony to Fitness to Free” after he landed in jail because of drugs. Fitness saved his life and he is now drug free and a fitness trainer helping people feel better with a new drug called “working out”.
- My friend, Jen wrote a book called “The Mommy Movement” after she struggled losing weight after her kids were born and suffered complications. Now she helps women conquer child birth in a whole new way!
We are not fitness Nazi’s that were born this way. We found out how fitness and nutrition helped us and now we like to help others feel better from what we have learned.
Is it easy? HELL NO!
Do I want to eat bread, pizza, burgers, pop tarts and drink beer. HELL YES!! Just about every day & definitely when going out to a restaurant.

Do I? Not 90% of the time! Why? Because I don’t want to be on meds.
Would I rather listen to music in the car rather than podcasts on nutrition, positive mindset and business. Sometimes, but I also like to educate myself so I have the tools to feel better both physically and mentally.
Do I watch TV at night? NO. I go to bed at 9:30 p.m. so I get 8 hours of sleep. Your body does its repair work at night. You NEED your sleep!
Everything in life is a choice. Sometimes it is not easy. Most of the time it isn’t.
It is sometimes frustrating looking for gluten free items at the grocery store & they are much more expensive and sometimes full of unhealthy ingredients. It is all about taking the time to educate yourself.
I remember when my client gave me the book, Wheat Belly, to read and I blew it off as just another nut case with a new diet. That is until I started doing more research on the effect food has on your body and auto immune disease. No, everyone does not need to be Gluten Free, Vegan, Paleo or Dairy Free but you do have to do what is right for your body & your situation.
Most people aren’t willing to try because it is hard. It is much easier just to take a pill.
We as trainers are ONLY trying to help you. A lot of us have been where you are. We know what it is like to eat out at restaurants. We know how confusing it is to control your diet. We know what it is like to not want to workout and sleep in. We are THERE with you!
We are normal people too. We have just decided to take our health into our own hands and try to help others to feel better by what we have learned.

I LOVE chocolate and coffee. I also have a stomach issue and those two things don’t always agree with me. It has been super hard to give them up, I am not there yet but I am trying. So I know what it is like to have to give up your favorite foods. You have to take it one day at a time!
Sometimes it is depressing having to deal with all of this. No alcohol, gluten, dairy and now chocolate and coffee but I am trying really hard to find alternatives. Am I always perfect, HELL NO!
The reason for this blog is to help you understand that your trainer, nutritionist, acupuncturist, chiropractor and /or doctor care about you. We know that it is NOT easy. We are not GODS and this stuff does not come easy for us either and we certainly are not perfect. WE EAT CRAP TOO! We have bad days, we gain weight, we skip workouts.
Does this quote hit home with you?

If you are struggling, then maybe it is time to find some professional help. Someone that cares about the WHOLE PICTURE! Feeling good is less about the scale and more about your diet, emotional state, water intake, stress level, sleep patterns and outlook on life.
Who is your TRIBE? Are they depressed? Overweight? Lacking energy? Negative? You are the sum of the 5 people that you hang out with. Maybe its time to find an encouraging tribe that will motivate and inspire you instead of bring you down.
Check out our Healthy Habits online group to find a super INSPIRING tribe of women that have been where you are and want to get the tools to get HEALTHY and feel GREAT! Find someone that can help you because we know it is not easy to change your lifestyle on your own.
Have you heard the saying “Do what you do best and hire the rest” I don’t do my own taxes because I don’t want to learn it so I hired someone that specializes, studies and knows how to do it.
