Tuesday Tips: Add a water workout

jack dawn swimmingIt is summer and therefore, we have been spending a lot of time in the water lately.  If you have not incorporated water into your workout AND your dogs workout, you are missing out.
Swimming is one of the best exercises that you can do. It is low resistance so it is easy on your joints.  As Jack ages, he can’t run with me like he used to but man can that little guy swim.  He loves it and I love watching him.  It is fun to swim with him, he is super fast.  Watch his video of his time at Mission Bay.

Last weekend, we had a beach party at Fiesta Island and it made my heart sing to watch dogs learn to love the water.  A few of them were very frightened at first but their mom’s were very patient with them.  They let them get used to the water by walking in slowly.  The life jackets helped keep them buoyant in the water and gave them a sense of security.  They started out in the very shallow water keeping their feet on the group and by the end of the morning, they were swimming!

It is very important NEVER to throw your dog in the water.  It will scare him and he may never like the water after that.  Dogs feel more secure if they can walk in.  It may take a little while for them to get used to it, but it is worth it to start slowly.   Would you throw your child in the water and say “swim”?  I would hope not, so please don’t do it with your dog.  Click HERE for a few more tips on swimming with your dog.

Your dog may never like the water and that is ok, it never hurts to try to introduce something new and see what happens.  Maybe taking them kayaking or SUPing will work for you because if they don’t like the water, they will enjoy sitting quietly on your watercraft and enjoying the ride!
