Is your booty getting a little soft? Do you need a little “pick me up” in the form of exercises to do while exercising Fido at the same time? Taking Fido for a walk is ok, but that is not going to tone up the buns so try adding these to your exercise routine and buns of steel will magically appear!!
1/ Stairs. Find some stairs on your walking route and start climbing!! You can do “stair repeats” where you go up the stairs, come back down and repeat!! Another fun thing to do is time your ascent and then try to match or beat your time each time up!
2/ Step Ups. No stairs?? No problem!! Find a bench and do step ups. This is a good time to practice Fido’s “stay” command or you can tie him/her to a nearby pole and practice the “down” command. Place your left foot firmly on the bench. Bring your right foot up to the bench and then lower left foot down then right and repeat. Do 10 on each side. Make sure you are pushing up through the heel of the foot that is on the bench.
3/ Lunge walks. While practicing Fido’s heel, you can practice your lunges!! Take a long step forward with your left foot and then bend your knee; make sure that the knee is not going over the toes and keep your heel firmly planted on the ground. Bend your back knee and keep your chest high. Push off of your back leg and push up through the front heel. Come up to a standing position and then switch legs. Make sure you concentrate on good form.
4/ Squats. While walking just stop wherever you are, put Fido in a “sit” and you can do 20 squats! With feet planted firmly on the ground, sit back like you are going to sit in a chair. Your weight should be in your heels and you butt should be back. You can practice over a bench and lightly touch the bench with your bottom. Push up through your heels, not your toes! Play with different feet positions: wide, narrow, plié, etc.
5/ Squeeze. Isometric “squeezes” work wonders! So while walking just SQUEEZE THOSE BUNS and hold the squeeze for 10, 20, 30 seconds! You can do this anywhere and nobody will even know that you are working out.
So there you have it. Fido will get both a mental and physical exercise workout and you will be firming your bottom and adding a little spice to your daily dog walk!!
If you don’t feel comfortable doing these exercises on your own or feel like you don’t know how to do them correctly then feel free to join our Leash Your Fitness “Butts & Guts with Your Mutts” class. It is held every Wednesday from 6 – 7 p.m. in a park in San Diego near you! You can sign up on our Events Page.
