Fall has officially arrived in San Diego! The nights will be getting longer and the weather cooler, but not before we have to deal with some warmer weather and those lovely Santa Ana winds. San Diego is generally cooler and decently humid in the autumn time, so it is the perfect climate for hiking or exercising outdoors. Although it won’t be as hot or dry as dry as it was in the Summer, it is still extremely important that you keep yourself and your canine friends hydrated!
A dog needs access to plenty of water; More if they have exercised, the weather is warm, or they take medication where dehydration is a side effect. Water is a vital component in keeping your dog healthy and performing vital internal processes, such as digestion and circulation. Dogs can easily become dehydrated. Dehydration can result in illness, organ failure, and even death. It is normal for your dog to pant, because unlike humans, they don’t have sweat glands to cool themselves off. Don’t panic if your dog is panting, but if they are panting irregularly or more than usual, pay attention.
Some symptoms of dehydration your dog may develop include tightening of their skin, drying out of the eyes, tongue, and/or nose. Your dog may also become lethargic. There will also be circulatory issues. If you suspect your doggy friend is dehydrated, give them some water and wrap them in a cold towel. Immediately take them to the vet. The vet will be able to hook your dog up to an IV and immediately replenish fluids. In most cases, dehydration will be a result of overheating or fluid loss, but there is still the chance of a more severe underlying issue.
Don’t forget that your dog does not sweat like we do–they “sweat” through their paws so keeping their paws cool helps a lot! Poppy is demonstrating the proper way to keep cool!
