“Richochet, Riding a Wave of Hope” is the true story of an incredible dog named Ricochet. Many of us in the San Diego pet community have heard of Richochet the surfing dog. We know she is active in local surf competitions and usually takes one of the top places. What some may not know is that she uses this amazing talent to raise thousands of dollars and change thousands of lives! This book tells the story of how Ricochet became the inspirational SURFice dog that she has, through the voice of her mom, Judy Fridono.
Wanting to make a difference in the lives of others, Fridono learns to raise service dogs. Ricochet is seemingly the perfect candidate, having more motivation and progress than all of her litter mates. However, Ricochet had other plans and eventually flunked out of the training program. As fate would have it, Ricochet was invited into a surf competition and took second place, which was amazing considering her lack of surf experience. Soon, “Ric” was using her talent to help those in need: disabled children, military veterans with PTS, cancer patients, and more. She gives freedom to those bound by wheelchairs, anxiety, or physical limitations by helping them surf. She seems to know exactly what each person she meets needs, reads their soul, and gives them exactly the companion they have been looking for to pull them out of their shell.
Her Youtube video helped make her a star (now up to nearly 4.5 million views!), which in turn has helped raise thousands of dollars for those in need of life-altering treatments, service animals, and therapy. She continues to do her important work to this day!
This book highlights the importance of listening to the universe and riding with the waves of life, rather than fighting them. We may think life will go a certain way, but sometimes the universe has other plans and communicates that to us. To Fridono, this was communicated through her dog, Ricochet. So many coincidences occur throughout the book that it is clear there is something larger at work. Ricochet stayed true to herself and her life’s calling and that is a lesson we can all take away from this inspirational and heart-wrenching book.
Those who love dogs, the active San Diego lifestyle, or being inspired by the determined human or canine spirit will adore this book and will finish it feeling moved and amazed at the possibilities of man’s best friend. It was truly a joy to read. If you are looking to get involved, there are resources available at the end of the book. Thank you Ricochet for telling your story and helping so many people!
