Research has shown that High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is effective in burning fat and helping you burn more calories throughout the day. It also helps you squeeze in a great workout in less time. Give it a try to get out of a workout rut, and don’t forget to bring Fido along!

What is HIIT?
HIIT is a method of exercise where lower intensity intervals are alternated with high intensity ones. This can be done with cardio or strength routines. The work phases should be an all out effort; the rest phases can be a complete rest or an active recovery. Find the interval that works best for you:
Beginners should start with a 10 second work phase and 20 second rest phase; those with a moderate fitness level could try 20 seconds on, 20 seconds off. Someone experienced in their exercise routine should aim for 30 on, 30 off. Repeat these intervals for 15-30 minutes depending on your fitness level.
Sample Workouts
1) Alternate walking and jogging (or jogging and sprinting) next time you’re out with your pup for a walk.
2) Add intervals of burpees, mountain climbers, or jumping jacks to your run or walk.
3) Complete as many reps of a strength exercise as you can in 50 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds before moving on to another muscle group (examples: weighted biceps curls, triceps dips, lunges, squats, sit-ups). Give yourself a longer rest phase if you’re repeating the same muscle group.
