Dog Events Etiquette

This weekend our Leash Your Fitness team is going to walk for animals in the Humane Society’s Barkin’ Beach Bash.  We will also have a booth at the event so please stop by and say HI!  We wanted to remind you of a few things that you may want to keep in mind when going to a crowded area with your dog, especially one that is full of dogs of all temperaments, breeds and sizes.

1/ Do NOT use a flexi-leash.  Even when these leashes are locked, you do not have as much control over your dog as a regular leash.  Plus, most people don’t keep them locked and the cord is very dangerous as it can get tangled easily.  If you don’t have a regular 6′ leash–the dog event is a great place to buy one!

2/ Remember to carry doggy bags with you.  There is nothing worse than your dog deciding  to do his business in the middle of the event and you don’t have a bag to pick it up with. Talk about embarrassing!

3/ If your dog is dog or people aggressive, then a crowded dog event is probably not the best place to practice socialization.  You may want to leave fido at home.

4/ If you have a little dog, please look at these events from their perspective.  They may be a little freaked out by all of the “giant” people and dogs surrounding them. Be careful that they are not stepped on by accident.

5/ Don’t feed your dog all of the dog treats that are “freebe’s”.  It may cause a tummy ache if your dog is sensitive to certain foods.

Dog events are fun when the participants are courteous to other people and dogs at the event.  They are a great place to see all of the cool stuff that is available to you for your dog.
