What the Dog Did by Emily Yoffe

What the dog did

What the Dog Did by Emily Yoffe is a funny and witty memoir about a previously self-proclaimed “cat person” who is convinced by her family to get a dog.   The family adopts a beagle and names her Sasha.  As the author finds out, beagles are not the easiest breed for a first time dog owner – she relates the difficulties Sasha has with house-training, poor recall, and other strange behaviors.  Yoffe also writes about the experiences of her friends and family members with their four-legged children – some silly, some scary, some expensive.  She delves into interesting facts about dogs, canine evolution, and breed-specific traits.  While some of the stories may make you tear up a little, most are fun, light, and at times hilarious.  As Yoffe says in the book, “maybe companionship and someone to lick your feet isn’t what really motivates people to have dogs. Maybe being able to tell dog stories is.”

Emily Yoffe is a journalist who regularly contributes to Slate.com.  What the Dog Did is her first book.
