City Girl, Country Vet was first published in 2011. It has taken me six years, two states, three cities and three library systems to finally get my hands on it.
Imagine my excitement (and disappointment) when I found out that, between then and now, this one book has become an entire series! And none of the libraries have the rest of them! I am going to have to invest in some used copies!
City Girl, Country Vet was initially intended to be the first in a trio of books about the main character, Amanda (Maz), but it has since evolved into a 10-book series about the town of Talyton St. George and its other residents, as well.
In this first installment, we meet Maz, a London vet, as she has just parted ways with her place of employment in the city. Her plan, she believes, is to fill in for a fellow veterinarian (and former vet school classmate) at her friend’s practice in the country- for a few weeks.
Much amusing insanity ensues, as Maz comes to realize she will be taking over her friend’s practice for six months, in addition to proving her worth to a very tight-knit community that is very much still hostile toward the “new” vet practice in town. I was quite taken with this page-turner, enjoying Maz’s misadventures as she struggles to right what turns out to be a sinking ship, all the while caring for a few willing clients, and fending off a two rival veterinarian’s attempts – one at ruining her, the other at woo-ing her.
I’ve written before about how much I enjoy reading books by another English author, Lucy Dillon. Cathy Woodman’s City Girl, Country Vet reminds me of those books, and I am really excited to find another enjoyable series about people and their dogs.
If you’re interested in Woodman’s books, the other two in the series specific to the character of Maz and her life in the small countryside of Talyton St. George are book #2 Must Be Love, and book #4 It’s a Vet’s Life. Also, it should be noted that City Girl, Country Vet has also been republished under the title Trust Me, I’m a Vet, with that book’s cover matching those in the rest of the series.
