What kind of question is that? Are you happy? Think about it for a second. Do you LOVE your life? Your job? The people you hang out with? Your family? Or are you just getting by each day and waiting for the weekend so you can party like a rockstar, watch mindless TV and spend hours on the computer. In his book, “A Philosopher’s Notes“, Brian Johnson lists 10 things we can do to boost our happiness.
- Expressing Gratitude
- Cultivating Optimism
- Avoiding Overthinking and Social Comparison
- Practicing Acts of Kindness
- Nurturing Social Relationships
- Developing Strategies for Coping
- Learning to Forgive
- Savoring Life’s Joys
- Committing to Your Goals
- Taking Care of Your Body: Meditation +Physical Activity +Acting Like a Happy Person
Do you do any of these things? Do you think if you would, you would be happier? Do you know where your life is headed? Meaning, do you set goals and strive to meet them? How do you know where you are going if you don’t have a map? If you are not living the life that you want to live and doing what you want to do–why not?
I am very fortunate that I have 3 jobs that I LOVE.When I moved to California I decided that I did not want to be inside all day working as an X-ray tech so for the last 10 years, I have worked hard at building a personal training and fitness business that allows me to be outside, bring Jack with me and have a little freedom. I had to give up a lot to do that but it was worth it to me for my happiness. When I got Jack 6 years ago, I was told bysomeone close to me that I wouldn’t have time to spend with him, so I built my Leash Your Fitness business around him. What is stopping you from doing exactly what you want to do that will make you happy and fulfilled?
Fast forward to your funeral (I know, not a good vision) –what are people going to say about you? Is anyone even going to show up? Do you think they will remember that you had a fancy phone, car or house or that you were caring, giving, inspiring and a very nice person that was happy and content. When you are reviewing your life during your last days, are you going to say: “I wish I watched more reality TV” or “I am happy that I lived a life that was full and enriching INSTEAD of spending it in front of the TV!”
My challenge for you, work on one of the above things each week for the next 10 weeks and see if it helps make you happier and more fulfilled. Maybe you won’t wish your life away waiting for the weekend, maybe you will actually enjoy each day and savor every moment!! Life is short, don’t waste it on doing things that aren’t good for you and waste precious time and/or being with people that are negative and bring you down. Spend it learning, doing and being the best person that you can be. That will only make your life better and more fun!

Take some time to yourself to decide what would REALLY make you happy!

Wow. What a great post for a Monday morning. I created my company to hang out with Duncan so I can totally relate! It is nice to have a reminder like this though that you still need to focus on the happiness part and not just settle for what you done so far.
