Jack and I doing a surf demo in the bay

The APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) conference is in San Diego this weekend and they asked the So Cal Surf Dogs if they could come and demonstrate dog surfing at their welcome party at Mission Bay.  Nobody else was available so Jack and I had the honor of doing the demo.

I am thinking there would be a handful of people there, no big deal. I get there and they are busing people in–we had to do the demo for over 100 trainers from all over the world, some had never even heard of dog surfing!  I wasn’t sure how we were going to pull this off so I was just planning on putting the board on the table and talking about it but they had other plans.  They thought we should try it in the bay!  So, never one to disappoint, Jack and I head to the bay to demonstrate dog surfing! Of course Jack was overly excited because he got to go swimming! (I forgot his ball AGAIN!)

I was on the beach trying to explain a little about dog surfing and answer any questions to all of the mystified eyes! Meanwhile, Jack is in the water barking like crazy because he wants to swim! I take the board out to the extremely flat bay and attempt to push Jack in to shore from the waves off of the wake of the boats going by.  The board would move about a foot and Jack would turn around so his butt was facing the audience and then dive off of it.  This happened at least 8 times.  He apparently got dock diving and surfing mixed up.

After several tries of the flat water surfing, I went back to the sand to explain a few more things and answer more questions while Jack proceeded to stick his head in my bag looking for his ball. The handle got stuck on his head and he is dragging the bag around the beach.  Since he couldn’t find his ball, he found the next best thing–A ROCK! He proceeded to dig holes all over the beach burying his rock.  Everyone was snapping pictures and cracking up at my little guys shenanigans.

Needless to say–our surf demo turned out to be more like a “Jack comedy show”.  I am not to sure how much they understand about surfing but I can guarantee that they were entertained!
