Wow!! We are so excited to start our Leash Your Fitness Urban Hike Series. Me and mommy have been scouting a lot of new trails for our hikers and we are finding some real gems.
Annie’s Canyon is one of them. Who would ever think that this treasure is so close to the beach! We went to scout it out with our friends and my girlfriend, Gidget. I think she was happy to be hiking with me again.
We realized then that only small dogs can fit through the canyon as it is very narrow.
This hike was one of our first in our Urban Hike series and our Trail Dogs run group and our hikers all met at 7:30 a.m. on North Rios in Solana Beach to start the hike together.
Because our group had over 30 people and dogs, we decided to split up the group. The runners went west first and then headed east down the trail to beyond the freeway and then hit the canyon on the way back. We got to see a few of them!
The hikers went East and explored the slot canyon first. A few of the girls could not go all of the way through because their pups were too large so they just hiked up to the beginning to check it out. I think a few of the dogs were bummed out!
A few of the dogs that went through were a little freaked out. We had someone sitting at the top to get the dogs as there is one part that it a big step up for them.
A few of the people were a little freaked out too. It is a VERY narrow canyon so if you are claustrophobic, this hike may not be the right hike for you.
Don’t despair. You can go to the left and hike up to the top of the canyon. It is a great little workout to get up there but it is worth it! There is a beautiful view from up there. Our hike group met up there as some hiked around and most hiked up through the canyon.
We then hiked back down the stairs. A few of the dogs decided to go crazy at this point as it was safer to unleash them so that they would not pull their mommy down the stairs! They were so happy!
We then headed East on the trail. It is a pretty easy trail. There is a little rocky spot under the freeway with a little bridge. You can have your doggy go below the bridge if the slots freak your dog out or their little paws go through the slots. Mommy carries me.
A few of the gals on our group turned around at the little kiosk on the other side of the freeway. The rest of us kept going! Why not? It was such a beautiful day! There were little trails everywhere and they were pretty cool! We had all size dogs with us and it was fun to watch them make new friends.
We got to the lookout and we all got a drink and a treat while looking over the lagoon. Us dogs were a little tired so we sat nicely for a photo.
We headed back. The trail goes right next to the I5 freeway. It was getting hot so it was perfect timing. That is why it is important to start early if you are taking your dogs hiking. Us dogs get hot!
We did get to hike along the water for a bit. I was wondering why we just couldn’t go swimming but us dogs aren’t allowed to swim there! What the heck is up with that rule?!
After the hike, we went to Lofty Coffee in Solana Beach so our parents could eat and drink. Us dogs got to know each other a little more because it is a very dog friendly place!
There were a lot of cute girls with us today!
