Motivation Monday: Water

Wow!! It was a HOT weekend in San Diego.  How about where you live?  This week, I would like to remind everyone to drink plenty of WATER!!  Drinking water does more than quench your thirst,  your body is over 60% water and many of your body functions rely on water.  A good rule of thumb is to drink 1/2 of your body weight in ounces of water so if you weigh 130 lbs, shoot for 65 ounces of water a day.  If you are working out and sweating or drinking alcohol, you will have to increase that amount.

Sometimes if you are hungry or tired, drinking a glass of water help.  So instead of heading to Starbucks for your 3 p.m. break, head to the water cooler!  Better yet, always have a bottle of water at your desk or work space!

Did you know that your cells in your body rely on water.  If they do not get enough, they will not work quite right and it will have a cascade effect through the rest of your body.  You may get achy joints, constipation, high blood pressure and / or  other malfunctions if your body is dehydrated.

I found this chart mayoclinic.org that shows what your body needs water for:

And what about your dog?  It is a good idea to get Fido in the habit of drinking water.  If you are out in the heat like we were this past weekend, make sure Fido is getting a drink on a regular basis.  Remember that dogs do not sweat like we do, they pant to release heat.

Another thing to keep in mind, if your dog is swimming in salt water, make sure they are getting adequate breaks and fresh water drinks.  The salt water will cause dehydration because the salt will pull liquid into your dogs intestines causing vomiting and diarrhea.  If fresh water is not given, your dog could actually go into shock because of the severe electrolyte imbalance.  If you see your dog vomiting foam or a lot of water or projectile diarrhea that is mostly water, then it is time for Fido to take a break from the salt water.   Remember that even playing with a salt water soaked tennis ball can cause this.  So remember to take plenty of fresh water when you are going to the beach!
