MIM: Pre-Workout Snacks

Last week we shared some ideas for getting the best post-workout nutrition to keep your body fueled.  This week we’ll look at the flip side: what to eat BEFORE your movement to get the most you can out of your workout!

What you eat before is just as important as what you eat after.  It can make the difference in being energized or sluggish. WHEN you eat is also key.  Remember to give yourself enough time to digest: most experts recommend finishing a larger meal at least 2 hours before your workout, or a small snack at least 30 minutes before.  It’s also really important for your pup to avoid exercising for at least an hour after meals, as this can lead to bloat – a serious condition that requires veterinary attention.

The Leash Your Fitness Trail Dogs run team has figured out exactly what they need to fuel up before a race or a training run!  Everyone has their own preferences, but all know that they need a carbohydrate that is digested quickly, and a small amount of protein.  The carbs give you energy, and the protein keeps you from getting hungry right away!  Recently the Trail Dogs got together for a recipe exchange.  Below is one of these recipes that would be perfect for a pre-workout snack and a list of other pre-workout snacks for you!

Other pre-workout snack ideas:

  • Yogurt with fruit and chia seeds
  • Apple slices with peanut butter or almond butter (or swap for a banana!)
  • Oatmeal with fruit and nuts
  • Toast with avocado
  • Trail mix with dried fruit (some salt is ok especially if you have an extra tough workout, but avoid fully salted mixes!)
  • Cheese slices on crackers
  • Smoothie (avoid too many greens pre-workout though – that can cause an upset stomach!)
  • Toast with your favorite nut spread

What do you eat before a workout?  We’d love to hear your ideas!
