Rainy Day Leash Your Fitness Butts and Guts Workout with your Pup!
Here is San Diego, we like to get outside and get fresh air and Vitamin D but we know that that is not always feasible in other parts of the country and with El Nino this year, it may not always be feasible in San Diego either. No excuses not to workout and gain muscle. This workout will workout your legs and give your dog a few things to do!
Warmup – 1 minute each
-March in place with high knees
-Side shuffle back and forth across your living room facing the same direction to get both sides, having your pup follow you!
-Torso rotations: stand with feet wide and arms out to your sides. Alternating sides, keep your back completely straight and twist to bring your right hand to your left foot. Stand and repeat with your left hand to your right foot. Use your core and glutes to lift yourself upright!
–Squats: Standing with feet at hip width, squat your booty down and back. All weight is in your heels and you are sitting back. This is a great time to play catch with your dog. Grab a ball or a toy and throw it for your dog to catch. Have them bring it back and drop it in front of you so you have to squat down to pick it up!
-Jumping jacks
Workout – Complete 2 to 3 rounds of the following exercises, doing each for 1 minute – do as many reps as you can in 1 minute! Get out your cell phones and use the timer on it.
Donkey kicks – hands and knees on the floor in tabletop position, lift your right foot towards the ceiling, keeping your knee at 90 degrees. You should feel this in your glutes. Complete a minute on one side, then do the other side. Have your dog practice a sit/stay next to you.
- Plank – hold a plank from either your hands or your elbows. While in your plank, practice fetch with your dog by alternating hands to roll a ball for your pup across the room. The imbalance will make your core work harder!

Sumo Squats – do 5 sumo squats in each corner of a room, walking quickly to the next corner after the 5 are complete. Have Fido follow you to each stop, practicing recall and heel.
Alternating front lunges. Practice puppy pushups with your doggie – when you step out, they lay down; when you come back up, they sit. See if they can keep up!
Wall sit – hold a wall sit and have your dog sit/stay next to you. Each time they get up, add 5 seconds to your wall sit! Remember to:- Put all of your weight in your heels, you should be able to pull your toes up
- Push your lower back into the wall
6. Cardio burst – jumping jacks! Do them around your dog and have them sit/stay the entire time.
Extra dog obedience exercise while you rest between rounds: hide a toy in a separate room and make your pup wait while you hide it so they can’t see you. Then tell them “OK!” and have them find it! Do this once or twice, and then it’s time to start the next workout round!
Cool Down/Stretch
Walk around your house to bring your heart rate down if it’s elevated. Do a few stretches and start your day!! You will be energized and ready to go and your dog will be mentally and physically tired!
You can do ALL or part of this workout. Anything is better than NOTHING! Remember that gaining muscle helps with your metabolism so that you can eat more!
If you would like to join us in class. We have a new class on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m. It will work your entire body in a fun and effective way.
