True Tails from the Dog Park I and II, by Max and Luther (and their guardians Kari Sherman and Carey Laubenberg), are adorable illustrated books full of stories from the perspectives of Max, a Puggle, and Luther, an Olde English Bulldog, and their dog friends. Max and Luther are best friends and play together often at the dog park. Their owners became fast friends after seeing each other regularly at the same dog park and trading stories about their encounters. The personalities of the dogs really come out as they inform the reader about dog park etiquette and rules.
In the first book, Max and Luther start out with some hilarious stories of people who just didn’t get what a bad idea it is to take food into a dog park! Of course the dogs will be all over them and even steal the food right from their hands! They also explain how it can be a bad idea for children to play in the dog park, both for the safety of the child and the dog. Interspersed with cute “Dog Park Journal” doggie newspaper pages, this book has some very informative tips for dog owners thinking of taking their pup to play at a dog park.
In the follow-up book, Max and Luther are back with more adventures! This time, they include lots of fun “Top 10” lists to teach us more about different dog breeds and “Fun Facts” that are really interesting to know about dogs in general! Some of the stories talk about life outside of the dog park, like fun games to play with your dog inside the house, or mishaps of other friends – like the story of Gerta the 190 lb Mastiff who got stuck underneath some stairs, and Fergus, a Mastiff who forced his guardian to hitchhike back home when he refused to walk up a hill!
It is guaranteed that you will find a little bit of your own pup in these stories! Nice easy reads with great illustrations, these books are educational, amusing, and relate-able. You will not be disappointed!
