MIM: Logs and Dogs

Today’s Move It Monday was inspired by our friend, Kelli Corasanti from Studio 8 Fitness, while Jack and I were on Jacks Journey USA and teaching in Rome, NY.  We took the dogs for walk on a nearby trail and got a little workout in while we were there!  Do you have a trail by your house that you can incorporate the “elements” around you?

Log Lunge

Find a stable log, bench, or piece of playground equipment.  Place your left foot up on the stable object. Get a nice wide stance so that your right leg can bend and have the foot be firmly planted on the ground.  Bend  the front right  knee, make sure your weight is in your heel of the front foot, not the toes.  The knee should be directly over your ankle.

Either stay here for a static balance lunge or bend and straighten the front knee for a more dynamic motion.  Have your furry friend by your side in a sit and if he or she is tall enough you can even use them for balance!  Team work right?

Log Lift

This trail had lots of logs that we had fun doing some strength training with.  One exercise is to pick the log up over your head.  You can bring it down by bending your arms and lowering it in front of your chest, keeping your elbows in.  This will work the shoulders and triceps.

It is very important to bend at the knees when lifting the log and as always, keep your tummy in tight and strong to protect your back!

Your dog is using his/ her dog obedience and sitting by your side cheering you on!  You can incorporate some cardio into this exercise by doing 10 lifts and then running up the nearby hill with Fido and then returning to do 10 more lifts!

Stay tuned for next weeks trail workout!  Let us know how you did on this one and what you used for the log lift and lunge!
