Beaver Bend State Park, OK

Because of the impending storm our plans to hang out for the day in Cedar Hill and to visit mommy’s friend who lives on a ranch nearby got changed. Alex (our new friend) had told us about a very beautiful park in Oklahoma that was kind of on our way.   The storm was supposed to hit the entire area by Tuesday so if we wanted to get some hiking in, we had to go NOW!

Mommy packed everything up in record time, got the board from Alex’s trailer and we were off by 11 a.m. We had a 4 hour drive to Beaver Bend State Park in Oklahoma. It was a pretty easy drive, once we got back through Dallas! Mommy listens to podcasts the entire time she drives so it makes the time go faster for her. I actually was pretty excited about going hiking so I looked out the window the whole time!

We arrived at the park at 3:15 pm.   The park was HUGE and lots of sites were open cause it was Sunday.  We went and picked out a cool site in the Acorn loop (#24) that was right on the river. The park ranger came by and informed us that there was no swimming or anything allowed in this part of the river. Well, that wasn’t going to fly with us!

We took a walk to find another site and found an even cooler one in the Buckeye loop (#16) and we loved the park hosts there, they had a little Morky (Maltese/ Yorkie) that was so cute.   But we knew we could do better so we walked back to the original site, got Spirit and took a drive to the Fern Loop (#4) and found the perfect spot! It has a calm spot for me to swim, there were boats allowed on the river so we got to see the people floating down the river AND we could walk to the hiking trails.

That entire process took us over 4 hours, not to mention there was no cell service so we had to drive to the top of the dam to text daddy and let him know where we were. While we were there, mommy did a little work and posted a few things on our Facebook page. Make sure you check there often cause she posts a lot of cool pictures.  The view from up there was pretty cool too!

On the way back from the Dam, we saw a trail and decided to check it out. It went down to the river but UNlucky for me the river was RAGING! My cousin, Andrew would have loved it because you could white water kayak on this thing! It was a nice walk along the raging river and on the other side of the street, the river was actually pretty calm so I got to go in there. There were a bunch of fly fishermen there. Daddy would have loved it here cause he loves to fish.

We got back to camp and enjoyed a relaxing night on the river. One of the neighbor ladies stopped by to ask about our trip. She didn’t try to touch me or try to get her photo with me, which was fine by me!

The next morning, we slept in a little and just enjoyed listening to the symphony of birds. (mommy told me to say that) It was really cool listening to them. It was a super quiet morning and when we left at 8 a.m. to go hiking, we did not see a single person. Not even at the kayak rental place when we walked by it.

We started our hike on Cedar Bluff Trail. It was AMAZING right from the start. Completely shaded and when we got to the top of the trail, the view of the Mountain Fork River was beautiful. Mommy got cell service again so she couldn’t help but share the view with everyone on our Leash Your Fitness Instagram and Facebook pages.

We got to the fork in the trail and had to decide which way to go. Our choices were a 1.8 mile Deer Springs Trail or a 7 mile Skylinetrail. Guess which one we picked? You guessed it, the 7 mile trail. We “thought” that we would go half way and then come back.

Cedar Bluff Trail

This trail was so incredible. It was tough. Lots of steep climbs, stairs, steep descents BUT the trail was in perfect shape and there was a lot of water spots for me! (Check out this short video of one of them!) We got to the half way point and because we did a little hike yesterday, we could see on the map that this trail came out at the same spot that we were at yesterday. Being the explorers that we are, we decided to go for it.

I have to say, I was proud of mommy. She is known to get lost on every hike but she did a great job. Only got mixed up 2 times and got back on course quickly. Some of the trail was through the creek so that was a little confusing but we did good! The only person that we saw on the entire hike was a guy weed whacking at a cabin that we went off trail a little to check out. Other than that, it was just us for over 10 miles! The birds were singing, there were a few flowers in bloom, the butterflies were following us and we saw some big fat squirrels! We were in heaven! The hike took 6 hours so thank goodness for our One Organic Dog Treats and our KIND bars. (mommy actually even ate some of my Ginger treats because they are so yummy)

Skyline Trail 2

Coming to the end of the hike, we could hear the raging river from yesterday. We knew we were getting close. The map said that the hike was 7 miles but we were over 10 at this point. We did hike from camp and took a few side detours but mommy was getting a little nervous but I was going strong and not worried at all!

When we came out on the road we had to walk the road back. Because we had driven it yesterday, we knew where we were going but it sure goes faster in a car! When we got back to camp we had hiked 12 miles! It said it wasn’t a loop but we showed them!

I got to sleep all afternoon while mommy took care of photos and stuff. Then we went to the park and she worked out a bit on her TRX and did her Yoga stretches while I watched. A few deer walked right by us while we were there. It was pretty cool! For once, mommy didn’t have her phone on her and was bummed that she missed photographing that magical moment!

After her workout she took me in the river to swim. She said the cold water would be good for my legs. The cold water, the magic lotion that she uses on my feet after we hike and her doggy massage did the trick! I felt great the next day.

Speaking of the next day, we woke up to a few rain drops so mommy packed everything up so she didn’t have to do it in the rain and we took off for another hike. We aren’t afraid of a little rain! We did the 3 mile Lookout Mountain Trail. It was kind of a strange trail because it went down. You would think Lookout Mountain would go up, eventually it did but there wasn’t much of a lookout that we could see but I got to go swimming at the end of it so I was happy!

It still wasn’t raining and mommy was determined to go kayaking so we did! So happy that we went because it was awesome! We were the only one on the river except for a few fishermen. Check out our short video of the views! The sun came out and for 1 ½ hours we just floated and looked at the scenery. We even saw a few deer near the waterline so we went to visit them.

It was so peaceful that I actually fell asleep! I set a record for not going in the water. Mommy was glad because the fisherman told her that they keep the river at a constant 48 degrees for the fish so I would have been shivering and miserable when I got out. It was such a great experience. We could even look up and see where we did the Skyline Hike yesterday. (thats in the video)

Beaver Bend State Park was awesome. I don’t know how we will beat it. If it wasn’t for the impending storm and the fact that there was no cell coverage and internet and mommy had work to get done, including posting on this blog, we would have stayed longer. Bummer!  But I have to say that I am pretty tired from all of the activities that we did!

We went into Broken Bow and went to a coffee shop where mommy got a salad in exchange for their WI-FII code. We sat there for 4 hours in the RV while mommy worked and I was forced to get my photo taken with all of the people that kept stopping to meet me. I am going to have to put up with this for 9 more weeks! I guess I will take the good with the bad because we sure are doing some fun stuff!

Off we go to Arkansas and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, it DOES! So stay tuned for our next post! It has a lot of action in it!

In the meantime, follow us on Facebook because mommy posts daily on there! And for a real treat, listen to our radio interview on the Pet Life Radio / Oh Behave Show. You won’t be disappointed!
