Holiday Hikes

I am not sure what a traditional Christmas is but our tradition each year is to get up and go hiking.  Sometimes we are someplace fun like Bodfish but this year we were in San Diego and mommy had to work later in the day so we couldn’t do anything too crazy.  The weather man told mommy and daddy that there was snow in the local mountains and that is all that they had to hear.  The next thing I knew,  we were heading to the mountains.

We weren’t going to be building any snowmen with what there was but there was a light dusting.  Sometimes I wonder what the weather people are thinking?

We did a 5 mile hike around Sunset trail.  It was pretty cold outside but I didn’t mind.  The only thing I minded was that I wasn’t allowed to go swimming in the ponds that we passed.

We had a fun morning even though we had to wear the dreaded Santa hats for our annual hike Christmas photo.  The things that I put up with!

The next morning, I knew that there was fun to be had when mommy put me in Spirit and we drove off.  Every time we go somewhere in Spirit we have a good time.

I recognized the campground as soon as we pulled in.  This was the very first campground that we stayed in Spirit when we got her last April.  It is called Lake Morena.  We parked in a spot and we were off hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Of course we didn’t do all 2,627 miles of it but we logged in 23 miles in 2 days!

It was a really fun hike.  I could see the lake in the distance. I think mommy is purposely keeping me from it because it is pretty cold and she knows that I would want to swim in it anyhow.

We hiked 5 miles down to a place called Hauser Canyon.  We were only 17 miles from the Mexican border.  I didn’t have my passport so we had to turn around there.

This was a different kind of hike because usually we hike up to a peak and then hike down on the way home.  On this hike we had to hike up on the way home.  It was only rocky in the beginning and then after a few miles it was a pretty nice trail for my paws.

The next day, we decided to go the other way on the PCT so we headed north away from Mexico.  It was a really easy trail.  It was pretty flat and nice on my paws, hardly any rocks.  The sky was really cool looking.  The clouds were forming all kinds of crazy patterns.

Three miles on the trail and it crossed the road that we drove in on and there was a sign that Boulder Oaks was 2 more miles.  Mommy didn’t know what Boulder Oaks was so being the curious person that she was, she made me hike 2 more miles!  I didn’t mind.  I like hiking with my mom. I wasn’t even tired yet.

We got to Boulder Oaks and saw that it was a campground for horses.  We rested there for a minute or two while mommy checked her phone because we don’t have cell service where we are staying and she likes telling her friends on Facebook what we are doing.  I actually like it when we don’t have cell service.  She doesn’t look at that stupid phone as much.

Our hike back was very fast. Mommy practically runs when it is time to turn around.  But she did stop to get a few photos because it was a really pretty day.

We ended up hiking 13 miles including the walk through the campground before we even started the hike.  Mommy said she was so proud of me.  I am almost 11 years old and I can still hike 28 miles in 3 days.

I got to enjoy my bully stick after all of that exercise!
