Do you want to take a vacation this summer, but can’t finalize plans because you don’t know what to do with your dog? There are many cool, pet-friendly accommodations to save you from your unrealized vacation plans! It might be really hard to leave your dog behind, but often they are on a doggy vacation as well when you leave them at one of the many cool pet accommodations that are available!
The simplest, and perhaps the least expensive solution would be to ask a friend or neighbor to puppy-sit, just make sure that they are responsible. Also, leave all of the contact information for your vet, any meds that fido is on and any other pertinent information just in case anything happens while you are away. Having a familiar face watch your dog will minimize separation anxiety for both you and your dog, especially if they can stay at your house. There are also companies that come out and walk your dog, give them their meds and make sure they are ok, we have a few in San Diego listed on our partners page. Most respected pet resorts are equipped with a certified and highly capable staff. These doggy hotels will usually feature several amenities to ensure the comfort of your canine companion. Markim Pet Resort features individual and family dens for you dogs, as well as large exercise runs, a large field, and a staff that makes their resort “the next best place to home.”
Everybody deserves to get away every once in awhile. You shouldn’t let your love for your dog get in the way of your vacation plans. There are several options available to take care of your dog! Look around, and choose the option you are most comfortable with! Happy Summer!

Thanks!

Summer is in full swing, and it’s hot out! Many of our canine friends enjoy swimming, and as such, it is important to know how to keep them safe in the water. San Diego is extremely water friendly, offering close proximity to all sorts of bodies of water. Swimming is a great way to get that low impact exercise for your dog, regardless of their fitness level. The following are some important things to consider when letting your dog swim.
Not all breeds of dogs are strong swimmers. Even if they are, you should still take some precautions! Many of the heavy bodied breeds and those with short legs aren’t well adapted for being in the water. They make life jackets for dogs and can be found at Markim Pet Resort or many other pet stores. You can even take them to Cutting Edge K9 for swim lessons. Trish will work with your dog and teach you valuable tips to keep your dog safe.
Also consider the purity of the water! If you are at a dog-friendly beach, such as Fiesta Island, just remember that salt is not good for your dog, and ingesting too much salt water can make your dog sick. Salt will also irritate your dog’s paws and skin. Chemicals in a pool, or algae and bacteria in bodies of fresh water can also irritate your dogs skin or make them sick. Just remember to have lots of clean water for them to drink and rinse them off after their swim!
Most dogs enjoy the water, and as your best friend, you need to make sure they are safe! Enjoy the summer and stay cool!
Thanks!

If you are looking to adopt a dog, or know anybody who is, please visit the Baja Animal Sanctuary. They have a lot of great dogs in need of a loving home. This week, our Dog of the Week is Kendra!

Kendra is an Akita (Mix). She is about 4 months old and is already 20 pounds! The Akita is extremely loyal and protective with its family. Kendra even has an extremely playful personality! This breed needs to be socialized as a puppy so they are friendly. Because they are intelligent and can become bored easily, mental stimulation is encouraged in addition to exercise. Leash Your Fitness classes are a great way to socialize and exercise Linda, both mentally and physically. Kendra was found as a stray and taken in by one of the shelter’s volunteers.
Kendra is spayed/neutered and up-to-date on all routine shots.

We offer mental stimulatin in LYF classes!
Most dogs don’t get enough mental stimulation to be satisfied or happy, and behavior problems are often a result. Dogs need just as much mental stimulation as they need physical stimulation, so simply taking them for a walk isn’t going to cut it! Your dog might be tired after the walk, but will end up bored with even more stamina in the long run to fuel that boredom in the long run!
Always incorporate dog commands and games in your dogs workout – the mental stimulation will tire them and you can have fun teaching them new things. Teach them new tricks and practice them when you are out on your daily walk or run! Even taking them to new places will give them some mental stimulation from all the new sights, smells, and sound. Just remember – it’s important to find a balance between the physical and the mental. Your dog will become even happier!

Thanks,

Walking on the Trails
Take severe caution when walking your dog on the trails this summer! Make sure you always keep your dog on a tight leash, and try to avoid allowing them to sniff in tall grass and bushes. Rattlesnakes can be found on or near trails taking in the sun and won’t hesitate to attack if surprised by your furry friend.
Rattlesnakes are cold-blooded creatures, so they can often be found in the open during the late spring to early fall period, so you will want to be safe during this time. It is not instinct for these snakes to be overtly aggressive, but if they feel threatened, they won’t hesitate to attack. Younger snakes are extremely dangerous as they haven’t learned to control the amount of venom they release with their bite.
If you run into a rattlesnake on the trail, back away slowly. The snake will usually warn you with it’s rattle before striking. It’s uncommon, but rattlesnakes don’t have to be coiled to strike. If bitten, keep the wound low and still. Running around and panicking will only increase your blood flow and the spread of the venom. Try to seek medical attention as quickly as possible. It is recommended to stay close to civilization and never wonder onto a trail alone. Always have your cell phone on you at all times. If your dog is attacked, keep your dog calm and seek out veterinary attention immediately.
Remember, be safe on the trails this summer. There are a lot of dangers and it would be smart to be prepared!
Thanks,

Dogs have highly sensitive hearing and can detect sounds high above human capabilities. Their ears are mobile due to 18 muscles that turn, lift, and tilt them to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. Because of their acute sense of hearing, dogs can hear sounds from four times the distance a human can.
This holiday weekend, make sure your dog is in a secure environment, especially if you are leaving them at home. Because of their sensitive hearing, many dogs are afraid of fireworks. If you are out with your dog, make sure they are on a secure leash so the don’t run away. When dogs become frightened, their behavior can become unpredictable, so the safety of your dog and the people around you should be your main priority.
Thanks!
